In all my 70+ years of living with dogs from puppies to old dogs, I have never felt the need to use a crate. But these days it's become fashionable to use a crate if someone can't train/control their dog. I think - well, human, how would you like to be shut in a cage?' So this is a very informative article by Charl del Rio, founder of 112carlotagalgos in Alhaurin le Grande, Malaga, on this very subject and why one shoule NEVER use a crate on a galgo or podenco.

Please remember galgos are not greyhounds and come from an entirely different background. Many a galgo has been rescued from a severely dark place and time in their life. Many many are rescued from dark small hovels, under ground and in some cases with pallets on the top.

Greyhounds In Need - lending a helping hand

Greyhounds In Need support several rescue associations in Spain, as detailed in their regular newsletters. However here's a story of an appeal from a UK rescue to which they responded.

'We recently were asked for our help from a small charity in Devon, Hearts 4 Dogs, who were raising funds to help 3 galgos. One, Roma, needed an urgent operation on her back leg. We were pleased to be able to offer some funding to Sue and her team and have just heard that Roma is recovering well from her operation and plans are being made to bring her, Trianna, and puppy Alma, to the UK in July.'

'A few days ago Greyhounds In Need (GIN) were made aware of our need to raise emergency funds for Roma and her operation. They were also told that unfortunately because of lack of funding we were unable to take the two other galgos that were in the Perrera with her. They have now been taken on by another rescue , we are glad to say.

GIN said they would like to help support us and we are happy to announce that because of their very generous donation along with the money we are raising we have managed to reserve two more precious souls to come over on the same transport as Roma.
Let me introduce you to Trianna and baby Alma,found alone in the countryside, covered in tics and fleas and very hungry.

'The 3 newcomers have had a quiet night. Viru & Atila don't look bad at first sight, but it doesn't mean they each carry a backpack from their past. The oldest of the 3, Zeneque is in bad shape. His skin shows many bald spots and has a red rash probably as a result of staying/sleeping in a dirty unsanitary environment. We immediately started a treatment with a special ointment that serves to make the skin supple and healed.

Galga Buleria - safe with Galgos Rescue Almeria

'Buleria arrived at our shelter on March 17th. She came straight from a hunter region Badajoz, Extremadura.
For those unfamiliar with Extremadura, this region is very rural and along with Andalusia, animals are generally treated very roughly.

Buleria was so scared at her arrival and unfortunately she’s still afraid of men.

Step by step she gains a little more confidence, hopefully in time she will be able to forget her harsh past and heal from her abuse.

Buleria is such a lovely soul with a very gentle and soft character.

4 older galgos need rescue and adoption

The galgueros are bastards when it comes to blackmailing rescuers. This appeal was on facebook last weekend, I've asked if they have been rescued. This is the story.

'These 4 galgos are with a galguero who no longer wants them. We want to get them out and get them to safety, because we know their owner will get rid of them one way or another.

They are relatively old, the galguero is impatient to see them leave, he gets angry, and made it clear to us that he was not going to wait to get rid of them….

We still and always need donations to save them, and/or an association to take over.

Galgo Vitorio and Podenco Nube - waiting in Malaga for years for forever homes

So sad that so many rescued Spanish hounds wait for years in a shelter in the hope one day they will have a forever home. Here are 2, in Alhaurin le Grande, Malaga 29120.

VITORIO (Galgo) and NUBE (Podenca Campanero) are the most abused breeds in this disgusting country!!!! As much as they are publicised, NO ONE, absolutely NO ONE seems to see them. BARS AND CHAINS ARE THE SADDEST "LIFE" THAT CAN EVER EXIST IN THIS WORLD But I'll continue to infinity and beyond to hope to find them forever homes.

Nube and Vitorio, bored in the shelter after all night in their kennel, bored of life in the shelter... they deserve a home, a family to have a real life with. No matter how much we give them love and care, they are not happy, they deserve so much more and no one gives it, why? Sad so sad. 7 and 5 years roughly respectively, a lot of life ahead, and if no one fixes it, they will spend the rest of their lives here, with the only family that has helped them even if it's not enough . Only you can prevent it, SPREAD, ADOPT, ADOPT. Malaga.

Adopting a dog - patience and more patience

We adopted our 2 podencos at the beginning of December 2021. Both 8 years old. Blind Bo has certainly had a rough life; he now knows his way outside into the garden to the toilet, and his way back in. But he is reluctant to come off his bed out of the kitchen into the rest of the house. Even a snuffle mat filled with treats doesn't tempt him. But we are winning insofar as he loves car trips - he's very confident walking up the dog ramp into the back of the car!

Rosely - we can't work out the reason for her fear. Unsurprisingly she is frightened of men, but she also has issues with food - it's taken a few months for her to be confident going to her food bowl to eat. Quite a change from most of our previous Spanish rescues who have been starved, lived on the campo, been in a perrera and who loved their regular meals! However, her character is developing and she's a delightful little podenca with people she knows.

Patience is needed with rescue hounds, sad we can't speak dog and learn what they have been through before rescue.
