On 19th June at 12:30, the European Parliament adopted its position on the proposal on cats and dogs with 457 votes in favor, 17 against and 86 abstentions.
Hounds aren't excluded.
The outcome is generally excellent for our pets.
Despite months of ups and downs and an endless list of exemptions, a sufficient majority of European Parliament MPs fulfilled their promises and ambitions, and continues the fight against the illegal trade of animals for their protection.
Key results include:
Small breeders (less than two litters per year) are covered by the selected items of the proposal.
All dogs and cats marketed must be microchipped and registered.
Online commerce will be better regulated with a certain level of verification; however, the proposal could be more ambitious in this regard.
The proposal will extend to wild animals kept as pets, opening the door to a List of Permitted Species..
One advantage: the ban on owning or selling dogs and cats in pet shops or sales establishments!
Thanks to this bold step, MEPs have brought us all closer to dismantling the illegal animal trade, allowing to protect millions of animals and save billions of euros to consumers, competent authorities, municipalities and shelters. It also opened the door to future work on other animals and a list of allowed species
Eurogroup For Animals will follow closely the start of the Danish Presidency of the Council. With a solid and original proposal from the European Commission and an ambitious Council mandate, they hope to have an effective proposal by the end of this year.
Many thanks to everyone who joined the online action on Monday, calling on MEPs to stand in favour of pets. Our voices have been heard.
Let's celebrate this great achievement!
We share from Eurogroup for Animals Thank you. Great job
