Candy Cane International Rescue saves greyhounds and whippets from the Chinese meat trade and bring them back to the UK and USA for foster and rehoming. They have two, Lady already homed in the UK and the other Merlin now safe in their China kennels.
Kerry says 'We’ve been researching Merlin’s breed, and we believe he belongs to one of the rarest breeds in the world! We’ve had a couple of these incredible dogs, including Lady, who arrived in the UK two years ago. I spoke with her owner and she still hasn’t found another of the same breed in the UK.
Lady has always had a strong personality—and still does! This breed is naturally bred as a guard dog, which makes perfect sense, as Lady had a serious bark on her… just like Merlin. Lady has even given a few people a (not too serious) nip, and Merlin also tends to nip when you're in his kennel.
He’s not scary at all, but he does like to check people out before deciding if he wants to interact. When I was in China, he would literally stick his head inside my coat and gently nip me! They’re also incredibly nosy.
These dogs are absolutely stunning, but they require an owner who truly understands them—someone who wants a sighthound with grace and elegance but also a natural guarding instinct.

Let's just hope the British Kennel Club and dog breeders don't get hold of any!
