Bev Farmer of Podenco Friends wrote this article with particular reference to Podencos but I am posting it here as it is believed by many organisations that there should be a blanket ban on their use on dogs.
THE CASE AGAINST USING E-COLLARS ON PODENCOS !!
In the last few days its has come to our attention within the podenco community of a trainer in the UK that claims it's important to investigate responsible e-collar inclusion, to help protect all animals concerned whilst still letting the dog be what he is! that even a vet in the Canary Islands recommend this to the owner .
This is the first of a couple of posts in which I will write addressing the issue of using "Electrical Training Aids " something I would never do..
UNDERSTANDING THE PODENCO
Podencos are a unique and ancient breed known for their intelligence, agility, and hunting prowess. These dogs, originally from the Iberian Peninsula, are revered for their ability to navigate rough terrain and their relentless energy. Their high prey drive and independent nature make them a challenging yet rewarding companion. However, training a Podenco requires patience, dedication, and understanding of their unique characteristics.
WHY E-COLLARS ARE PROBLEMATIC
1. Ethical Concerns and Potential Harm
E-collars, also known as shock collars, are devices used to deliver electrical stimulation to a dog as a form of correction. While some proponents argue they are an effective training tool, many animal welfare organizations and veterinary experts strongly oppose their use. Many countries in Europe have banned such collars based on scientific evidence. Organizations like Dogs Trust, The Kennel Club, RSPCA, Battersea, British Veterinary Association, and Blue Cross have campaigned against e-collars for years. citing evidence of physical pain, psychological distress, and potential for misuse.
2. APDT UK (Association of Pet Dog Trainers) code of practice prohibits coercive, punitive techniques and aversive equipment.
Numerous studies have demonstrated the adverse effects of e-collars. Research shows that these devices can cause stress, fear, and anxiety in dogs. Many studies published found that dogs trained with e-collars exhibited more stress-related behaviors and a higher level of cortisol (a stress hormone) compared to those trained with positive reinforcement techniques. This evidence underscores the importance of humane and science-based training methods.
3. Legal Restrictions
In many European countries, including Spain, the use of e-collars is regulated or banned. The Spanish government has laws prohibiting the use of handling tools that could cause injury to animals, including e-collars. Penalties for violating these laws range with fine ranging from 500 to 10,000 euros. These regulations reflect a broader societal consensus on the importance of humane treatment of animals.
TRAINING PODENCOS:POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT
1. Building Trust and Bonding
Training a Podenco successfully hinges on building a strong, trusting relationship. Positive reinforcement techniques, which involve rewarding desired behaviors with treats, praise, or play, are essential. These methods not only enhance the dog's learning experience but also strengthen the bond between the dog and the owner.
2. Understanding Their Needs
Podencos are energetic and intelligent dogs that require ample physical and mental stimulation. Regular exercise, interactive toys, and engaging activities are crucial to their well-being. Training sessions should be short, varied, and fun to maintain their interest and motivation.
3. Professional Guidance
For those struggling with training their Podenco, seeking help from a professional trainer experienced with the breed is highly recommended. Organizations such as the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) in the UK advocate for positive, non-coercive training methods and provide resources for finding qualified trainers.
CONCLUSION
Using e-collars on Podencos, or any dog, is a controversial and ethically fraught practice. The potential for physical and psychological harm, combined with legal restrictions and the availability of more humane and effective training methods, makes e-collars an inappropriate choice. Podencos, with their unique characteristics and needs, deserve training approaches that respect their intelligence and sensitivity. Positive reinforcement, patience, and professional guidance are key to unlocking the full potential of these remarkable dogs without compromising their welfare.
