Adopting a dog - patience and more patience

We adopted our 2 podencos at the beginning of December 2021. Both 8 years old. Blind Bo has certainly had a rough life; he now knows his way outside into the garden to the toilet, and his way back in. But he is reluctant to come off his bed out of the kitchen into the rest of the house. Even a snuffle mat filled with treats doesn't tempt him. But we are winning insofar as he loves car trips - he's very confident walking up the dog ramp into the back of the car!

Rosely - we can't work out the reason for her fear. Unsurprisingly she is frightened of men, but she also has issues with food - it's taken a few months for her to be confident going to her food bowl to eat. Quite a change from most of our previous Spanish rescues who have been starved, lived on the campo, been in a perrera and who loved their regular meals! However, her character is developing and she's a delightful little podenca with people she knows.

Patience is needed with rescue hounds, sad we can't speak dog and learn what they have been through before rescue.

Yet another poor galga desperately needing help. Here's her story.

'So many galgos saved, so many galgos in poor condition, so many medical costs,so many more requests for taking in galgos but our financial position does not allow this, that is what it is.

But when the police bring us this poor girl with a badly broken leg, she´s also covered in ticks, we just can't say no because in the perrera they will not operate her, probably they will put her down. We just can't let that happen because she is maybe 1 year young so she still has an entire life ahead. The operation will cost almost 1000 Euros and we count totally on the help from you, the public, to help us to make it posible for Tamara, that's the name we gave her, to be operated so she can make a new start in life.

Protectora Scooby always there for the hounds

This photo is of beautiful galga Tormenta, found abandoned with an enormous would in her side, several weeks ago. The photo of when she was found is on this weblink, be warned, upsetting pic.

Cobie tells the story.

'Tormenta was found abandoned with an enormous wound on her left side. She was treated, also with lasertherapy, for weeks but she has recuperated completely, just a scar and that's all. So now she is looking for her forever home. She is very lively, just a bit over 1 year young, and an active family with maybe a few children who can play with her and make long walks, I'm sure she would love that! She is not scared or anybody, good on the lead, good with cats and a very happy, lovely small girl. Chip:...7466.

Protectora Scooby - 2 galgo puppies rescued

2 tiny galgo puppies found abandoned and suffering from a bad case of mange. Now after a couple of days' treatment, they are starting to look better. Will take a while for their coats to regrow. Please donate to their treatment, Scooby is desperately short of funds and they have hundreds of galgos and podencos to care for, not counting the other animals including horses.

Slovenia Sighthound Society - working with Protectora Scooby for the galgos

There are currently over 450 dogs in Scooby and its smaller 'branches' so our help was more than needed.

In four working days we sterilized 9 dogs, neutered 17 dogs and 1 goat, performed 2 second surgeries (wound treatment) and took care of hospitalized and sick dogs. In addition to the veterinary work, we cleaned all the fences, clipped some dogs, trimmed the long claws, gave them antiparasitics, took care of the chickens. We sincerely thank all the employees and volunteers at the shelter who work every day for these animals.

And most of all - got a lot of energy and new ideas for work for the future. Will you help us with this?

Protectora Scooby - a desperate situation - over 450 dogs rescued since December 2021

Terrible news from Scooby, they are full and running out of funds.

Fermin Perez, president of Scooby, said: "We’ve had a tough few months with more galgos and podencos dumped than more or less ever before. The flow of galgos and podencos has been unrelenting after the most recent hare coursing season.

"We are not the only shelter to experience this. Fellow rescues agree that we have not seen peak numbers like this since about 30 years ago.

"We have rescued 450 galgos and podencos, with 200 other breeds in the shelter as well. Quite simply, Scooby is full and we cannot rescue more dogs for time being.

"As you can imagine this places significant pressure on our resources and we are now in survival mode.

"We will need to solve this crisis if we are to continue."
