Galgo Sheriff with Akira Dog Sanctuary - urgently needs a home

I've received this appeal from Hayley O'Brien at Akira Dog Sanctuary.

Sheriff - an urgent case, he is a lurcher pup of 8 months. He is a beautiful dog, he just has typical puppy energy and the senior dog of the house couldn't cope. He is good with dogs and kids etc.

I can send more details have videos or more pictures too. He can travel to the UK os needed.

Galgo Rescue Almeria - Dana and 8 babies added to the fold

Galga Mama Dana recently gave birth to 8 beautiful galgo puppies. It’s going to take a few weeks before the little ones are well enough to play outside. A few months ago we build 2 new quarantine kennels to give mum’s with puppies the necessary privacy and space to raise their puppies. At this moment the puppies who were born at GRA weren’t allowed to go outside outside their kennel to protect them from PARVO or other viruses. We only could let them playing outside at the age of 4 months. Therefore we’re now building a secure / safe outside area on the 2 kennels so the new born can get a chance to go out and explore new things.

So every help is welcome to cover costs of materials etc…….

'Training' galgos in Spain

'The reality Greyhounds & Galgos (Spanish Greyhounds) face in Spain, only recently we were involved with bringing back 3 beautiful young Irish Greyhounds that got exported to Spain following their 'retirement' from racing in the UK, two of the dogs & possibly a third were last registered to trainer Lee Fields of Monmore Green Stadium.

I've seen one of these 'cage' trainers in rural Murcia, luckily not with any dogs inside at the time.

Yo Galgo talks to Galgos del Sur

Yo Galgo interviewed Patricia from Galgos del Sur. The interview online is in Spanish, this is the English translation.

'To my question: What do you say when hunters tell you that you are making money giving for adoption the dogs they gave you? She answers that they consider associations like a kind of 24/7 service that immediately takes the dogs they don't want. Whenever they are told to wait, they say that then they will get rid of the dogs, give them away, or worse. In this way, the people working in shelters are pressured emotionally to keep the dogs, end up having more than they are supposed to, in a sheltered economy that is not abundant.

Each galgo normally costs around 500 euros per year, that is if they don't have any medical condition or injury. If that is the case the costs skyrocket.

As an example, Galgos del Sur spent 6000 euros trying to save the leg of a galgo that was injured. One of the main problems here is that the injuries with which the galgos enter the shelter are old and did not have treatments on time, therefore are much more expensive to deal with. But what galgueros don´t understand is the costs of a normal standard of living for a dog with all the vaccinations, the periodic deworming, the neutering, or the good food we give them.

Molly The Pet Detective

I want to share with you an amazing book I am currently reading. 'Molly The Pet Detective' by Colin Butcher is the story of a working cocker spaniel rescue dog which has been trained to find missing cats!

Colin Butcher is a retired UK policeman who chose a project to see if a dog could be trained to find missing cats. It's the story of how he researched the idea, the help he got from Medical Detection Dogs both in finding the right dog and training both her and himself.

The book also tells the stories of missing cats Molly found, as well as missing dogs, the latter sadly a growing problem in the UK.

Aggression in dogs - what are the causes?

Our galgo Bracken has been with us for 11 years; he has always been a sensitive dog, happy in the pack of hounds and walking the meadows every day...on leash, as he has a hunter's nose! However, since we sold the farm in January 2021 and downsized back to the UK, he has caused us concern by showing aggression to other dogs.
