It's lovely to have a happy rehoming story to publish, I hope you enjoy reading the story of Chiry and Maui.
'I am Marta Pedrali, I read all your articles since I adopted a galgo. I adopted a beautiful black and white galgo two years ago and a brown one last year. I love them so much and I do not understand why people treat them in those ways in Spain and in other parts of the world. For this reason, I share my story, my daily life with my special galgos through a Facebook page called "Chiry the galgo & Maui" in order to make people understand how amazing life is with them and how sweet they are. I also volunteer in an Italian association that homes them, its name is "Progetto Galgo Onlus", we are in the province of Bergamo, Italy.
Paolo and I (Marta) are a couple that the 30th June of 2018 adopted, for the first time, a black and white galgo named Chiry. We adopted Chiry with the help of an Italian association called “Progetto Galgo Onlus”. Chiry comes from Protectora Scooby Medina in Spain. I chose him (it is a “he”) personally, after looking at the website of Protectora Scooby. On their database are plenty of dogs, I couldn’t choose at the beginning. But, when I noticed a photo with that face so sad and frightened, he caught my eyes and it didn’t take a long for me to understand that it was him, Chiry, that I would have surely adopted! Now, two beautiful and intensive years have been passed since that hot afternoon when Chiry came to us.
At the beginning, it was not easy (the association warned us about everything), Chiry was afraid almost about everything: when we went out for a walk, he didn’t want to go beyond a certain point. He was frightened about people, especially about children. He was afraid of trash cans on the streets, of dogs (of any size and type), of the wind-blown leaves…So, we looked for help and a volunteer of our association Progetto Galgo helped us understand Chiry’s fears, facing them one by one with calm and patience. I have to admit we did a great job. Paolo, above all, because being a man, it has not been easy to be accepted by Chiry. Now, they love each other!
We spent our first holidays with Chiry travelling through Europe, by car. It was a wonderful adventure, sleeping all together in a tent, discovering as many cities and places as possible with our super galgo Chiry. He adapted so well, what he loved the most is for sure the tent! He loved sleeping between us on the mattress.
What really changed and ameliorated Chiry’s behaviour has been the arrival of Maui. She (it is a she, this time) is an explosion of happiness, craziness and love: mix everything together and you have Maui! She arrived the 21st of September 2019, always thanks to the association of Progetto Galgo Onlus from Scooby Medina. Paolo chose her, he wanted a female galgo that could help, somehow, Chiry to be more self-confident and more open to discover new things without being afraid. He found the perfect galgo.
Maui loves endless cuddles. She is always at your side waiting for a cuddle or a biscuit. Going for a walk with Maui is like running a marathon! She has to sniff every corner and be aware of everything that happens around her. She likes eating everything from dry food for dogs to home-made ones, vegetables, fruit, paper, plastic, cloth … about these last ones, we have to pay attention not to leave something on the table or anywhere because you know the end it can make!! Now it’s almost one year that she has been with us and she is making a good job with Chiry. At the beginning, he didn’t accept her arrival, but now they are like good brothers, sometimes they love each other, other times they hate each other.
Adopting a galgo is one of the best things we have ever did in our lives! Their unconditional love for you is so powerful that you can not help it! And yes, two is better than one and who knows, maybe three is better than two… in any case, Chiry and Maui have a Facebook page “Chiry The Galgo and Maui”, here they share their daily life, their story with us and some adventures they had with their amazing mum and dad.
Thank you Marta for sharing the lovely story of how you came to adopt 2 lucky galgos.
