Many missing microchipped pets are never reunited as it’s optional to scan & check microchip registration. It’s time veterinary professionals, authorities and rescues checked pet & keeper match on the original database at a pets 1st consultation or yearly checkup. It’s their only chance to get home
Vets can play a valuable role in reuniting missing microchipped pets. We have microchipped our pets with the expectation to be reunited if the worst happens and they are lost or stolen. If just one organisation is not committed to scan and check microchip registration the whole system fails and is not fit for purpose. Legislation is needed to replace half hearted ‘strengthened, best practice recommendations’ VetsGetScanning.co.uk
Regular readers will know that I sometimes publish amusing cartoons by Richard Skipworth, who is passionate about greyhounds in the UK, but the cartoons are also great for galgos. There is now a range of collars, key fobs...on sale using his designs.
This just in from Izzy & Finn's Hound Boutique, who made a donation to Greyhound Trust Hall Green for every Skipworth collar they sold!....
Since the launch of the Rich Skipworth's Greyhound Designs collars on the website we have raised a whopping £1002 for Greyhound Trust Hall Green. A massive Thank You to everyone who has purchased a collar, lead or keyfob as you have all helped with this amazing total. They are all still available to buy from the charity section on the website and a donation from each sale still goes to the greyhounds
I first came across Vera Thorenaar when I started my Galgo News blog in 2007 and travelled to Spain regularly thereafter. As with many other rescue associations, the Protectora has grown over the years. Here's the story, together with a link to galgos hoping for forever homes.
'The History of Galgos en Familia is tightly linked to its founder Vera Thorenaar, who started her journey and immersion into the difficult situation of the galgo since 2008, and came into contact with a Dutch association that dealt with adoptions for abandoned galgos.
Dedicated to the translations, to getting her work known in Spain and being a link between said associaction and other associactions dedicated to the protection of galgos in our country, she started to write her personal blog to explain the difficulties experienced by this breed, to broadcast cases of abandonment and to retell her own experience as a foster carer of galgos waiting for adoption.
In the early hours a press release was made announcing suspension of travel from European countries to the USA for 30 days. This has been amended that this does not include US Citizens (go figure) .. however it will impact on dogs traveling out there and with so-much uncertainty SHUG have decided to postpone flights which has a knock on effect on us here in Spain. Crystal in the photo is due to fly to Canada in a few days so we are waiting to see if Canada will impose similar restrictions.
Galgos 112 have worked for many years rescuing and rehoming abandoned and injured galgos and some podencos in the Barcelona area. Here are the stories of 4 hounds recently rescued.
'This is ARIN, he lay down at the door of Ainara and Ander because he couldn't take it anymore. When the family dog began to cry and bark at the door, they went out to see what was happening, and there he was, without strength, unable to take another step.
Fortunately he went to the best hands. They took him in his arms, took him inside and gave him food and drink. He was taken to the vet and he contacted us.
He only weighed 17kg, is about 2 years old and has a scar on his neck where the microchip used to be, in addition to a lot of wounds in his malnourished body. Ainara and Ander have decided to be his foster home until they find a family. His happy face says it all. Now Arin knows that nothing bad will happen to him, and that he will no longer have to roam the mountain looking for something to eat.
We rescued VALENTÍN on 14 February ... we couldn't have chosen a more suitable name for him. He is a young, friendly, and beautiful galgo inside and out, despite all the huge scars that run along his body.
