To....
Snr José Manuel Barroso
President of the European Commission
1049 Brussels,
Belgium
Sir
Due to the world wide reach of the internet, it is impossible to hide most anything from anyone who owns a computer. We live in a global community where news is shared instantaneously on a daily basis.
By now you must certainly be aware of the huge volume of news on the internet denouncing Spain as a tourist destination. The reason? Not Al-Qaeda, not bad weather, not lack of sightseeing but for the atrocious treatment of animals in that country.
You have undoubtedly heard about the plight of the Spanish Galgo - from the moment they are born until the moment they die they know nothing but suffering and misery. They are fed nothing more than stale mouldy bread, and ‘live’ in oppressive cold dreary conditions. Come the end of January, after they are used for hunting and the season ends, the massacre of the Galgo begins.
The way these animals are killed is worse than any horror movie you will ever see. These animals are hung from trees, thrown down deep wells, dragged behind cars, shot, bludgeoned, as well as being abandoned en mass to meet their fate with a speeding car or slowly starve to death. News has just been released stating some are donated by hunters for veterinary students and subsequently embalmed ALIVE. Please take a moment, clear your head, and think about this. The anguish they feel is impossible to imagine.
Thus far, Spain’s answer to all the aforementioned atrocities committed on these dogs is to deny that any of this happens. It is quite obvious that this kind of attitude does nothing to improve their awful worldwide reputation for being one of the worst EU countries regarding animal welfare.
Just very recently, the Swedish government was criticized by animal protection and conservation organizations across Europe in December, after it authorized the killing of a substantial proportion of the country’s wolf population. No less than 12,000 applied to hunt 27 wolves, the set quota. The majority of animals were killed on the first day of what was believed to be a less than humane hunt.
Spain is the only country which still allows hunting with Galgos. The mass murder of 50,000 sentient beings per year simply for the sake of a few mens’ ‘entertainment’ is clearly unacceptable. The trail of bloodshed and misery is unbearable.
The EU MUST implement protection for the Spanish Galgos which will ensure they can live a life free from the immense torture they face on a daily basis.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely Yours,

I've spent a long time trying to find where I can email Snr José Manuel Barroso, it is impossible to find. Where can I email him? There isn't a link provided! I want to copy and paste the above letter to him and other MEP's but this website is very difficult to use and I've been unable to email anyone. Can you help? Lily, England

I managed to find the link, it is http://ec.europa.eu/archives/commission_2004-2009/president/index_en.htm
I will write to the other MEP's tomorrow. It is so upsetting to read this. I want it to stop. Why o why do people have to be cruel? I have cried for these poor poor babies...I wish I could adopt them all..

Hi
If there was an email address, a link would be provided. You don't email, you copy and paste this letter into a word document, print off and post. Email boxes for politicians get blocked. Very often they do not publicise an email address. Also, if you ant to write to other MEPs, there is a page on Galgo News which gives a link to where to find your MEP. All the information is there, just put the key words into the search box.

Lily, Check out this post.http://www.galgonews.com/2010/02/letter-to-the-ec-write-to-spains-meps-too-stop-the-annual-galgo-massacre.html
However, the above post is one from last year, the Spanish Prime Minister has now changed - new government, and there are more recent letter-writing campaigns if you put words like 'letter writing campaign' in the search box on GN homepage.

Nicholas please, come back to Spain (to Scooby shelter in Medina del Campo) and try to help people who are fighting against this plight in our country. Sure you are wellcome at Scooby galgo rescue.
If you don´t travel to Spain simply you are ignoring the issue, don´t solving it.
warm greetings
Luis del Caño, Scooby galgo rescue volunteer
