An appeal popped into my Inbox this week, which I wish to share with you, in the hope that you will all write to your local MEP, as requested. You will find a link at the end of the post which will connect you to a website on which you will be able to find the contact details of your MEP. Please cross post where possible.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I want to bring to your attention a very sad situation in your country which is of great concern to me and to many of my Spanish friends. This involves considerable cruelty to animals and in particular to dogs. Although there are laws to prevent such cruelty they are rarely, if ever enforced and there is a rather large gap in the law that regards greyhound racing dogs as “working dogs” which are therefore not covered by the law. After the rabbit-hunting season is over they either get thrown out, dumped on the motorway or are hanged.
From Pro-Galgo. Some of the people of Linares impresentables have fun with this helpless puppy. He painted with red varnish all his tiny body, and 2 weeks later you can still see the last spots of paint on his head. The volunteers have tried very hard to removed as much of the varnish as possible, which unfortunately could be toxic, especially for a baby. He has been baptized MAX, is now much better and has received his first vaccine. The case has been reported but as usual, nothing is being done.
MAX next week cones to us from his temporary shelter, the foster mum says he is super affectionate and loves walking in her arms all day.
More get-togethers for galgo and podenco owners. Galgos112 had such an event last weekend. Here's the report from their website.
A hundred dogs and hounds in the first meeting in Madrid
Goose bumps. Little more can we say when we are still digesting the successful convening of the first dogs and hounds meeting held at the Buen Retiro by Galgos 112. We give our heartfelt congratulations to our colleagues from Madrid, headed by José María Canalda, heartfelt appreciatiation, and to all who have accompanied us coming from Madrid, Valladolid, Toledo, Barcelona, Girona, Cordoba, Mallorca, Sevilla, Valencia and elsewhere. To all, thank you very much for making this success possible.
Larisa Počivavšek lives in Slovenia and is a prime mover there in raising awareness of the plight of the Spanish galgos and podencos. At the beginning of October she organised a Galgo Fiesta and the first meeting of her newly formed association. This is her report.
The last weekend we spent with our group of volunteers was the weekend full of joy and sighthounds' happiness…
Our group works independently from all the other formal groups and societies of Slovenia and was found with the only aim to help sighthounds and to widly inform public about their problematic issues.
Remember Cristal? She of the different coloured eyes. Look at her now. Always nice to see pictures of a galga rescued in a bad state, looking wonderful after all the care given to it by shelter volunteers.
Look at these beautiful galgos/galgas desperately seeking forever homes away from the hell of Spain - don't let them run the risk of being stolen and taken back to life with a galguerro or gitan. El Refugio-Escuela - volunteer Marisa speaks wonderful English.
