I've just received the following tale of an horrific story, sadly one which occurs far too often in Spain. The story is told in the words of the Spanish volunteer.
Once again it happened…. In our land of famous wines, even better cheeses, and…… land of galgueros!
Yesterday evening (Saturday 15th December) at 21.00 o’clock I got a phone call from the emergency number 112.
Someone had called them because they found a greyhound, still being alive, in the gutter of the highway that was lying there since Friday morning. The dog could not walk.
I contacted my companions of the shelter in Villarobledo to ask if they could go and search for the dog…. They went there, but it was 10 o’clock in the evening and in the dark they could not find it…
This morning (Sunday) I drove 70 km to look for the dog myself, and there I saw it, the poor thing…. After two nights outside in a temperature of 5º under zero…. I saw the marks in the land how he tried to escape from this place and this terrible pain after he was knocked down.
Scarcely alive, his urine and blood dripping on the pavement.
Very careful I have taken the dog and brought it to a vet…. without any hope…. His thread of life was so thin and the dog seemed to beg me to give him rest after two days of suffering, of pain, of cold, of….
Sometimes I wonder when justice will occur in this country…. because it is to bad for words, the suffering of these innocent beings!!

This is heartbreaking....as you say, how many times?
The only small crumb of comfort is that perhaps, for a few short moments, that galgo knew someone cared.
i hope so. Bless you for trying.
