Sonia is a volunteer at the Albergue refuge. Her family did not really care about animals, but Sonia always tried to help the street dogs, feeding them.
She discovered the refuge by accident and began helping there. She also discovered, on the Internet, websites of other refuges and realised she was not alone.
Conditions at the shelter improved when they received a small grant from the EU so that now the dogs have shelters to protect them, especially in the cold winter nights. But there are only two volunteers looking after the dogs, Jose, the president, who works full time, and Sonia, who lives 30 km away.
It is especially dangerous for galgos arriving at the shelter, as there is a very serious risk of them being stolen.
She also fosters galgos, some of the dogs stay with her for months or years. When they are adopted, she says part of her heart goes with them.
She is passionate about helping the dogs, and raising awareness of the enormous problems in Spain, especially for galgos.
