All that's needed for the volunteers to complete the construction of the new refuge at Pedro Munoz, Ciudad Real.
Ciudad Real is a city 200 km south of Madrid. I visited the La Bienvenida refuge there in July 2007, to bring out 4 galgos for rehoming in France. I’ve now discovered the town has a second animal refuge, this one in the Pedro Munoz area.
Construction was begun with the support of the Mayor, but it’s only half built because the funding ran out.
It has breeze block walls, a few dog runs, and the only other shelter from the cold and wet winter weather for the 120 dogs inside are sheets of wood propped up against the interior walls.
For over a year Amigos de los Galgos has worked at finding homes outside Spain for the galgos and podencos which arrive at its doors. Recently, 12 galgos left for new homes in Belgium.
The end of the hunting season in Spain in January will see the galgueros rejecting their galgos en masse, so the number of incumbents of the refuge at Pedro Munoz could rise to 170. Without protection, the dogs run the risk of pneumonia and hypothermia, as temperatures can drop well below zero at night.
Many volunteers have put in an enormous amount of work to improve the life of these dogs. So an appeal has been launched top raise the 8,000 euros necessary to complete the work.
