Gordon is a very handsome, pure white galgo, found wandering the streets of Badajoz with another galga, both miserable and very thin.
He was rescued and delivered, by van, to the home of Cristina, a volunteer with a rescue centre south of Madrid. She remembers his sad, honey coloured eyes as he came out of the van. This lovely lady fostered him for five months, restoring him to full health and teaching him his manners. He apparently would not tolerate cats at that time, hard to believe now as we watch him curled up with our rescued kitten.
After a false start with another adoptant...
...in France, and through no fault of his own, Gordon was returned to L'Europe des Levriers. He then spent two more months being fostered in Paris. Poor dog, such a huge amount of disruption in his recent life and one dreads to think of the circumstances of his early life. He’s only two and a half years old!
The minute we saw him, it was love at first sight. We brought him home to meet the rest of the family, dogs Cleo and Bella, and Olive a 4 month old kitten found abandoned in a hedgerow.
He quickly settled in, taking over the sofa, loves the sunshine but doesn’t think much of rain! He’s quite a food thief if he gets half a chance, loaves of bread, fillets of fish for our dinner. He's training me not to leave any food out, but that's difficult when everything is 'Gordon' height!
We've had to raise the height of our garden fence, so he can run free and play with his housemates without jumping out and exploring the fields beyond, but that's all a small price to pay for the pleasure he gives us.
We cannot recommend this breed enough. How any human being can be cruel to these gentle, loving dogs is beyond our comprehension. If you can find room in your life to help to give a Galgo a good home- please do!
