This is the Galgo News/Podenco Post Christmas Card 2011, a watercolour by my friend and animal lover Anji Ratcliffe; it's a galgo and podenco pup on a Christmas Tree bauble. Printed on 210gm white card, it retails at 5,00 euros per pack of 6 inc envelopes plus postage. All proceeds will go towards vet fees for injured galgos and podencos.
Spanish shelters and refuges rely on donations towards the cost of caring for their rescued dogs. Why not Sponsor a dog/kennel/stable as a Christmas or birthday present. The following are small refuges which will be very grateful for any help.
This beautiful galga is Reka. You will see her terrible injuries below. She was found a week ago, the injuries were not fresh, and smelled, it was not known how long she had been suffering like this. She was exhausted, hungry and ready to give up when found.
Ana from Gran Familia tells the story. 'She had to be anaesthetised in order to clean up and sew these ugly wounds, the leg muscle has been joined from behind but possibly she will be left with a slight limp. She had some internal bleeding and a torn vulva, which would intimate she was pregnant. It is difficult to imagine how these injuries happened but Reka has had to stay in the vet clinic to have her wounds treated.
SOS Animals is being evicted - they have until Friday to find somewhere else for all their rescued dogs. This is one of the pieces of news which always enrages me...the authorities are supposed to be responsible for all abandoned animals - we all know they turn a blind eye much of the time. And they penalise and make life difficult for the wonderful people who run refuges, fundraise, volunteers. Ohhhh, it makes me sooooo angry! Please put your hands together to pray that all these dogs and cats find room somewhere. SOS Animals, near Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol. Donate here to their relocation fund.
Remember Esperanza, badly beaten and dumped for dead in a rubbish skip. She is now walking unaided! What a miracle. See the latest videos here and walking down steps, and along the pavement! Everyone involved in saving her life and her recuperation is a miracle worker.
Another video showing hunting with galgueros; note some of the horses have chopped tails - many of the Spanish take off manes and tails - read about the annual horse wrestling fiesta in Galicia - they don't think the poor animals need to keep the flies off!
And further remember, most of these men will dump their dogs at the end of January, if not before.
This video features galgueros in Seville showing their dogs, heading off for the hunt, hunting itself. It illustrates the type of terrain where the dogs are used, the galgueros themselves, lost galgos, maltreated galgos, El Refugio in Seville where the volunteers pick up the pieces after these men have abandoned and dumped their dogs.
