L'Europe des Levriers is the French association from whom I adopted my 3 galgos and with whom I have worked on rescues. This is the story of the gypsy camp of Las Cuadras in Seville, as told by their President, Beatrice Monnet, on their website. At the end of this report, you can see a video of the Fundacion Benjamin Menhert on one of their rescues - 600 dogs taken out of the camp in one year!
'Since its inception in 2006, L'Europe des Levriers has repeatedly denounced the terrible camp galgueros Las Cuadras in Seville. Cristina, our Vice President, regularly rescues galgos and podencos from this hell. We go to our kennels in Madrid every 3 or 4 months to bring these rescued dogs to France for adoption.
Diana, a stunning beige brindle galga, 4 years of age... with a lifetime left to live, who, after 4 years of existence as a hunting galga, finds herself in a perrera. The sounds and cries of her fellow dogs scaring her to trembling state. Grieving for life on a cold wet perrera floor. A galga 4 years od with a life to give.
This is ZP, a 9 month old Podenco Canario. He's in the SARA Protectora refuge on Lanzarote, Canary Islands. Unless adopted on mainland Europe, he is destined to spend the rest of his life in the shelter. Read on.
SARA Protectora is the refuge on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. They take in dogs and cats - and the difficulty is rehoming them - very limited on the islands. Here is a guide as to the costs involved in rescuing a dog or cat.
These pups are at high risk, their mom is a galga (still no pictures of her), she is lame in one leg. We assume she has run for food for her babies and
goes in search of food leaving them alone with the risk that entails. Besides that, she goes through an area where there are many hunters and now it has started to rain.
The dumping of galgos continues, increasing now as the hunters abandon the dogs which don't make it as hunters, breeding bitches etc. Cobie of Scooby asks (on Facebook) 'Why do they bring them to a perrera where they will be killed after 21 days and not 40 km. further to Scooby where they are safe?? I will never understand that. Anyway, this morning I took from the perrera in Simancas these 3 female beauties which can be taken of from the deathlist now and certainly will be adopted very soon to live a happy life with a loving family. They are young, beautiful and very, very sweet!'
And 8 more in the Gesser killing station, Cadiz; some of them have been reserved. But you can see from the pictures how frightened they are, not understanding why they are there. I suppose the only good thing we can say about the galguerros dumping them at the killing station is that it is better than hanging them, dumping on motorways or dropping down wells.
Two stunning galgos rescued by Galgos del Sol in Murcia, looking for their forever homes - Lobo and Mario.
This stunning boy is Lobo, Tina says 'He was reserved and then his home fell thru so poor sod has been in a kennel now for 4mths or so. This galgo has been living for some time on the streets of Sevilla. The people around the area have been feeding him. Recently a van with Romanian gypsies have been passing by and trying to catch him, they deal in dog fighting. The address of the girl to contact is ana-jimenez85@hotmail.com
Now the Spanish government are trying to introduce an animal 'protection' law. If it goes ahead, they will fine anybody found feeding stray dogs or cats. Strays will be able to be euthanised 3 days after entering a compound.
PACMA are organising a protest against this new law on Sunday, 23rd October in Madrid. If anyone is going, any associations protesting elsewhere, please be sure to let me know.
