Three galgas and a podenca, all in a cell on death row in the Jaen killing station at the end of 2009. All were rescued; this is Luna, who loves the daughter of her adoptants. The family says they play together and Luna is so sweet with the baby. Now she is healthy and step by step she's more trustful. Now she has the life that she deserves.
Angie was another of the 3 galgas saved, is now well and desperately seeking a home like this, or even a foster home while she recovers her health and strength after veterinary care.
This is the latest news on Sofie, the abandoned galga who was viciously kicked in the mouth. She had a second operation yesterday.
Silvia reports 'Sofie is little bit better, the vet is feeding her intravenously through the neck, there is no other way. Her mouth is much better, the tongue has changed in two days and is not now bleeding. The jaw has necrosis but not so much as the vet thought, it is in the vascularizada ( I hope you understand I don't know the word in english) zone and it regenerates very well. The infection is better also.'
Fight on, brave galga, and thank you Silvia and the team for saving her.
Donations towards the vets fees to Telma of Galgo Rescue or Silvia direct.
Here's a photo of Sofie recovering after her operation. Sofie is the abandoned galga who was savagely kicked in the face and had her jaw broken. She is recovering, but will need another operation in due course, and she also needs a foster or adopting home to give her the help she needs to recover from the operations and her terrible experience. If you can help, please contact Silvie or Telma
Interesting article sent to me. It's got me thinking, since I have horses and hay. And lurcher Floyd got to a dead leveret before me the other day, and devoured it.
Sandra Baas of Baas Galgo has just sent notice about an article which has appeared in one of Spain's largest newspapers and written by a famous Spanish journalist. Please, dear readers, shout out loud in the comments section - under the photo it says 'Es tu escribo' - click on that to comment.

The galgueros are the most humble people of the hunt. A few days ago in Guadalajara, some 300 members held a meeting and asked me to speak out in their defence. I was honoured. I was told there is pressure on them and they are considered unjust. We agreed that it was imperative to end the few, and very few, couple of dozen complaints a year, as there is clearly organised propaganda about cases of abuse and brutality. It must be made clear to those scoundrels, the bench and Justice.
You may remember at the beginning of the year I featured a story about 3 galgos and a podenco in the Jaen killing station. The galgos were all rescued under the auspices of GRIN and podenca Estrella came out to me to foster. Two of the galgos and Estrella have now found their forever homes, but galga Angie was too ill and it has taken all this time to get her health sorted out.
This is what Telma of GRIN says.
'Angie is one of the three Jaen galgas that was rescued Feb. 2010 from the killing station. The other two galgos, Luna and Quia and the one podenco Estrella have been homed already. Angie was not able to homed due to her stomach illness which turned out to be worms and giardia, thus her loss of more weight.
Telma Shaw from GRIN reports. 'I am very worried about her as half her tongue is gone. I ask you, how did that happen? It is just devastating to hear that. She was easily caught once Isabel saw her in that condition, thank God. Was driven in personal cars to Valencia from Badajoz and is now at the clinic. She is being stabilized, radiographs taken, antibiotics given and we will see how she is today. Poor Silvia didn’t sleep for two days arranging all of this and sick with worry she was at the clinic at 2:00 am when Sofie arrived'.
Podenco Rescue has just released a story about 4 podencos travelling from Lanzarote to the UK by air. They will be in Dusseldorf where their UK carers will collect them. The appeal is for a couple of people to dog walk, so these beautiful podencos can stretch their legs out of their cages, and do toilet duties if necessary. If you can help, please contact Podenco Rescue direct.
The mass abandonment of galgos at the end of every hunting season in Spain, and the cruelty the majority suffer, is caused by the hunters. They are all supposed to be members of a hunting federation, although there are of course illegal hunters, and the gitanos. I have composed a letter appealing to the hunting federations to put their house in order - control breeding, introduce registration and microchipping, monitor a galgo throughout its life, responsible ownership and more.
Please would you write to the addresses below - some of them are unfortunately only email addresses - with a copy of the letter; Charl and Dioni have kindly translated it into Spanish too.
Please keep your letter polite, expressing feelings of anger will not help our cause.
The bestiality and cruelty of men knows no bounds. An abandoned galga in the hellhole of Badajoz, was being fed by a volunteer, trying to catch her, has returned now kicked in the mouth to break her jaw. This is an appeal for donations to pay the vet fees for the rebuilding work.
From Telma Shaw of Galgo Rescue and GRIN.
