El Refugio, north of Madrid - over 200 dogs need your help

Tina Solera is one of the British volunteers working in northern Spain helping abandoned dogs, especially galgos. She told me about a refuge in the mountains north of Madrid, El Refugio. It has over 200 dogs at the moment - and the hunting season hasn't yet finished! This link takes you to the information of how you can help them, if you live in the same area.

Besides needing donations to pay for dog food, veterinary care, etc. they also have a range of T shirts and Sweatshirts at unbelievable prices!

Latest Update on Van Gogh - maltreated galgo puppy saved by SOS Galgos

This is the message received today from Anna, at SOS Galgos.

Our foster volunteer Patricia and our main person in Zaragoza , Juan Carlos, yesterday morning decided to get up and drive to Ciudad Real from Zaragoza to go and get their two galgos they were waiting to foster. Due to the recent bad weather, the MRW messenger service hasn't been working and they didn't want another day for the service to start work.

So they drove 6 hours there and six hours back to get the galgos that had been patiently waiting in a kennel in the cold. While there, they decided to take the little one with the cut ears (his name is Van Gogh) back since he hadn't been able to travel up to Barcelona as planned because of the bad weather so they are going to send him to us on Monday from Zaragoza instead, where the service will be more reliable. We are so happy that he is going to spend Christmas in Patricia's warm home.

Maltreated galgo puppy - on his way to a new home in Holland

Remember the appalling tale of the little galgo/mix puppy who had his ears and tail cut off, and was saved by SOS Galgos. This is the latest news about him.

"Next wednesday 30 dec. we are going to Barcelona to collect the maltreated puppy.
He is now on his way from Ciudad Real to Barcelona where he is staying for one week
at a fostering home.

More galgos needing help in Mairena killing station, Seville

On Friday, I was in the killing station of Mairena, Seville, to rescue a few small dogs, and found more than 30 galgos. They urgently need to get out of there and sheltered and fostered before they are sacrified.

My Christmas and New Year wish to you all

2009 has been an amazing year for Galgo News. The number of readers has increased considerably, which means we are all getting the message about the plight of the galgos in Spain spread far and wide. We've had responses to some of our letter-writing campaigns, and we've highlighted the extreme cruelty inflicted, not only on galgos, but on all of Spain's dogs. And we continue to praise and support the associations and volunteers who work tirelessly at the 'blunt end of the wedge. One day, if we all work together, we WILL make a difference.

Thank you all for your interest in the stories on Galgo News, and please spread the word, the galgos and podencos especially need everyone's support.

Coping with Snow in Animal Refuges in Spain - Very Hard Work

Snow arrived in France yesterday. It's fine for the Pyrenees for skiing, but no good for keeping animals. Frozen water pipes, frozen water buckets, grass under snow.....

But for the Arca de Noé refuge in Albacete in Spain, it is even worse. This picture is of the refuge in summer. See what they are coping with, along with many other northern Spanish refuges and shelters. Look at the depth of snow, plus frozen water pipes, snow in the dog runs....I can't begin to imagine what they cope with. The volunteers are absolute angels.
