Well, folks, this is it. Galgo News is going to be silent for 2 weeks! I know, it’s not good! But this is the first time since I started Galgo News back in November 2007 that Galgo News will not have any postings for 2 weeks! And you can’t really begrudge me a break!

Sara Animal Shelter on Lanzarote has an urgent appeal for assistance in rehoming four Podenco’s in the UK in November this year.
There are families waiting for these dogs but the travel costs by direct flight are way out of budget (approx 500 euros per dog) so an alternative solution has to be found.
They are hoping to fly the dogs to Germany, Holland or Belgium with holidaymakers acting as flight escorts. The cost of these flights is considerably less, at around 50 euros per dog, but there is a two dog per flight restriction. As it is virtually impossible to find two flights on the same day they would need temporary foster homes until the remaining two dogs can be flown over (hopefully in the same week).

An appeal from Scooby Medina for dogs which have been in their shelters for nearly 2 years, and no one wants them. There's even a pedigree cocker spaniel! Please take time to read the email and details about the dogs, and help find them homes. Scooby have over 600 - yes 600 - dogs in their care!
Hi Everyone,
Here is my regular "plea" / call for attention to long time Scooby dogs. This time is a little different, because these dogs are ones that I have not had any requests for and/or ones that arrived at Scooby in 2008 or earlier. Considering it's almost 2010, we need to find these dogs a home as soon as possible. Some of them are older, some of them are younger - but one thing is the same for all of them, they have been here too long and we can't forget about them.

Paul & April Carrier run the Alpha Dog School in Rota, Cadiz. As well as taking bording dogs, and galgos for rehabilitation, they also began a new area of business earlier this year.
April explains.
'Paul is training young suitable dogs as Personal Protection Dogs for sale to the more wealthy individuals who are now become victims of serious crime and intimidation.
For example, an elderly couple we know who live in the Marbella area, will not leave their house without their Rotweiler. They have been threatened several times in their local area by gangs of immigrants, and the woman had her handbag violently snatched. They are now too scared to go out without their dog.

Mo Swatek, President of Pro Galgo, contacted me to tell me the horrendous tale of dogs being transported from Spain in the horrendous heat of a Spanish summer. The dogs paid with their lives. As though they had not already suffered enough in Spain, they were murdered in the end by thoughtless, brainless people. This is the story from Pro Galgo.
We have received this information and have confirmation that this Liege based organization has transported a number of dogs in a vehicle without any ventilation DURING THE DAY in the heat of the Madrid summer: www.4pattesoubliees.com
According to our Spanish sources, they had mechanical problems in Ciudad Real on the way back to Belgium, decided to go to Madrid, and the doggies paid the price with their lives; suffocating to death was a nasty way to die for innocent animals that had already suffered terribly at the hands of dreadful people in Spain.

Lisbeth Mønsted Larsen of
Greyhound Action Denmark is another tireless campaigner for improving the life of animals. I asked her to tell me how she got involved with helping the greyhounds and galgos.
'There is not much I can tell you about the galgos adopted throughout Scandinavia. I know people who have adopted galgos and who treat them very well and that the galgos who have found homes here are well looked after. The reason that I can´t say more about that is simply because my involvement with the galgos is more a question of helping them where they are situated in Spain and alerting other people to their plight. I concentrate more on the plight of the racing greyhounds as does my small organisation.
