Susanna has sent me some more information about the problems for the volunteers of the Province of Granada trying to deal with the massive abandonment of dogs from that reagion, and in particular highlighting the Podenco Andaluz.
This is what she writes.
'I think it is a problem of culture. The Podencos are not known by the majority of Spanish persons. The people use them only as a hunting dog. In the reality the Podenco Andaluz is a guardian and a fantastic pet too!
I want to tell you that the Protectora de Granada San Francisco de Asis is the most important in Granada becasue they have poor abandoned dogs from everywhere in the Provincia of Granada. However,they have a bad period because they do not have many volunteers,and they are really volounteers (they don' earn money). They have not time to put much information on the web site.

I will put on my thinking cap but, at the moment, a lot of my time is taken up with writing to earn some income!

It never ceases to amaze me just how many abandoned dogs there are in Spain. Hundreds of beautiful dogs, pure bred and mixed breed, live in refuges all over the country, looked after by dedicated volunteers. Andalucia is a particularly dreadful place to be a dog! Here is a report about the Protectora de Granada, in Fuentevaqueros, which fights against cruelty to dogs, and their abandonment.
Suzanne explains. 'I would like to let you know that there is a place in Granada, Protectora de Granada, in Fuentevaqueros , that fights against cruelties and abandon of dogs. Several are mixed dogs, other ones are pure breed dogs that are used for hunting by hunters and some tourist that go to Spain to hunt and then, after the hunting period, abandon them in the woods or in the streets.

Back from the trip to Cordoba, to visit refuges and meet some amazing Spanish volunteers working in them, and to bring out some more wonderful galgos and a couple of podencos for rehoming in France. And I also met my first 'hung galga' in the flesh, rather than just through information on the Internet.
As yet unnamed, she was found hanging by a cord round her neck, struggling. The volunteers cut her down, and took her to the refuge, which is 60km south of Cordoba on the Seville road. She has been in the refuge for 2 weeks now, her physical wounds are healing a bit, but her mental state will take a lot longer. Arrangements have been made to bring her to France as soon as she has been named, microchipped and vaccinated.

Just to say that I will be silent again for a few days, as I'm off to Spain via Madrid to Cordoba with L'Europe des Levriers to uplift some more galgos deserving of their forever families in mainland Europe, outside Spain.
It doesn't solve the root problem - lack of control of breeding of galgos, living conditions of galgos, and disposal of them at the end of every hunting season. And it begs the question - if the galguerros - as is now the case - know that if they dump their galgos at the gates of a refuge or perrera, a volunteer association/refuge will take them in and try and rehome them, then it just encourages them to continue to do it!
So, it would be useful to have the comments of readers as to how you see a solution to the problem.

Apanot is an animal refuge in Tenerife where Chugi is staying. With the horror stories coming out of mainland Spain, it is easy to overlook the Spanish islands. I've highlighted the sterling work of the SARA association on Lanzarote, now we learn about the plight of the podencos on Tenerife. There are dozens of them, many are females, shut in cages, volunteers struggling to help them, but NO ONE wants to adopt a podenca! And why? They are just as adorable as galgos, and make the most wonderful companions - I can speak from experience!
Apanot is desperate for adopters to come forward, or sponsors to travel to mainland Europe or Madrid. Please can you help these amazing volunteers who look after these wonderful dogs.

Although it is June now, there are still abandoned starving galgos loose on the streets of Spain, abandoned and cast out by the heartless galguerros at the end of January at the end of hunting. We have to all get together and DO something about this. However do the poor volunteers cope?
This is an appeal via my good friend Charl. Her contact has been notified of a galguita wandering around the town, food is chucked to her, but she is weak and scared. She needs rescuing before she becomes pregnant, but the4 vfolunteer has no room to take her, she is already paying out of her own pocket for veterinary care for others and fees for galgos in a perrera.
