Apanot is an animal refuge in Tenerife where Chugi is staying. With the horror stories coming out of mainland Spain, it is easy to overlook the Spanish islands. I've highlighted the sterling work of the SARA association on Lanzarote, now we learn about the plight of the podencos on Tenerife. There are dozens of them, many are females, shut in cages, volunteers struggling to help them, but NO ONE wants to adopt a podenca! And why? They are just as adorable as galgos, and make the most wonderful companions - I can speak from experience!
Apanot is desperate for adopters to come forward, or sponsors to travel to mainland Europe or Madrid. Please can you help these amazing volunteers who look after these wonderful dogs.

Shelter - about 3 years old, good with other dogs, desperate to be adopted
Chugi - found at the beginning of May 2009 after being a stray around the town where the refuge is, but difficult to catch because of being so frightened. She was in pup, had 5 puppies, and now she is gaining our trust and getting more confident
Disney - she is one of the best, just over a year old, very affectionate, loves to play with the other dogs. Arrived with half an ear missing, bleeding badly, probably because the tattoo was cut off~!
Handsome - about 4 years old, very calm and independent, runs free outside the refuge but has always come back. No problems with other dogs or cats.
Julie - little less than 4 years old, very frightened initially, but now loves the volunteers. No problem with other dogs.
Maggie - 2 years old. Possessive of food, and also deaf, but extremely affectionate, so would be best as an only dog.
Mint - about 2 years old. Arrived at the refuge all skin and bones and terrified. Is now totally integrated and affectionate with everyone.
Pretty - about 4 years old. Very calm but would escape as she hates being in the refuge. Just craves affection and a forever home.
Fine - 3 years old. Wonderful dog, no problems with anyone.
Sofia - 3 years old. Reunited with Shelter and they are good friends, but alone she is very good and sweet.
Twiggy - 2 years old - very scared and nervous. She needs time and much affection to gain trust to forget the bad treatment.
Supreme - 4 years old She is the most timid of all the podencas, but is beginning little by little to trust us. Very obedient and calm. Not much muscle through lack of exercise.
All the podencas are sterilized and negative for filaria (heartworm). All of them arrived at the refuge as a result of being abandoned on the streets. All arrived in terrible condition. THEY ALL DESPERATELY NEED FOREVER FAMILIES AND HOMES.
In order to take them to mainland Europe, they need godfaters/godmothers/sponsort, because they cannot travel by plane alone. It is relatively easy to take them to Madrid because we have a volunteer network there, people wh will look after them.
BUT it is more important that they have a forever family and home. They make wonderful pets, spend a lot of time sleeping, and here in Tenerife they have no opportunity of this because no one sees them, no one adopts them.
