Diseases of the Galgo - Participate in a Health Survey before End of January

I have received the following information from Scooby Medina. I hope as many galgo owners as possible will participate. I am particularly interested because of the problem my own galga Karmel is suffering with this terrible disease Pemphigus Foliaceous.

Dear Galgo Owner,

The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine would like your participation in a survey to identify the frequency of health-related conditions in Galgos. The results from the survey will help us to better understand which diseases are most common in Galgos and will serve as a baseline to help us conduct clinical research to improve the health of Galgo.

22 separate galgo rescue associations in France - ridiculous!

I had some bad news this week, yet another French galgo rescue association has been formed! Do you know how many French galgo rescue associations there are - at the last count today 22...22! And they very rarely work together. How efficient is that?! Ok, so I'm commenting as a Brit living in France, but at least the British greyhound rescue associations and actions groups co-ordinate and work together.

I've researched how many galgo rescue associations there are in Europe to date:

Holland 2
Belgium 5
Italy 1
Germany 1
Switzerland 2

France 22 need I say more?

Conditions in Refuges in Spanish Winter - Why Dogs Die

URGENT MESSAGE - SAVE THESE 25 GALGOS THIS WEEK

AN URGENT MESSAGE FROM MO SWATEK, PRO-GALGO

25 galgos (Spanish greyhounds) have only a few days left before they are put down, if we do not pull them out of the killing station by the end of next week. If we don't take them, either they will be killed or some others will be put to sleep to make room for the new ones to come (end of the hunting season)!!!!

PRO-GALGO is in touch with volunteers in the Jerez Gesser dogpound and we are expecting today the first information about their health state etc. but we urgently need funds to pay for the following expenses:

Internet Fundraising Auction to equip the new Hospital at Scooby Medina

Diane Ward is Scooby's Virtual Adoption and Volunteer Coordinator for North America. She's organising, on behalf of the Scooby Medina Refuge, an Internet fundraising auction. Here's what she says.

Hello,

The Scooby Medina Refuge in Spain (www.scoobymedina.org) is proud to announce our first collaboration with Carpe Canem for our newest and first internet fundraising venture! The proceeds of the auction will be used to furnish the new hospital and surgery center and for maintaining and upgrading the Scooby shelter.

Urgent Appeal from Levriers en Danger - 500 euros and 10 cubic metre van

Levriers en Danger have made an urgent appeal. This is what they say.

'One of the refuges with which we work has asked us to come to their aid to make an urgent rescue of 100 galgos which were found in a critical state. The person who owned them has been banned by a judge from keeping animals. The refuge has taken them and asked us to take them. We naturally have to liaise as soon as possible with the director of the refuge where the dogs have been placed.

We need 500 euros to pay for the transport of these galgos already in the refuge and to prepare them for adoption, but chiefly to provide food.

Guam Greyhounds - Disgraceful Disposal of Dogs

Guam is an island in the Western Pacific Ocean, the largest of the Mariana Islands. It belongs to the USA. Guam Greyhound Racetrack closed abruptly in November, resulting in hundreds of greyhounds being handed out to anyone who asked. The world is watching and protesting, and greyound rescue associations in the USA are desperately trying to deal with the situation. Pat Getz of Greyhound Protection League reports that the first two greyhounds, Houdini and Jet Li, have just left Guam. They are being flown to California, and a CA greyhound group will care for them till they are adopted out!

Don't Sew or Knit? Sponsor someone to make a coat for a galgo

For people who do not sew or knit, but would like to help with desperately needed coats for the galgos in Spanish refuges, Sandra Baas of Baas Galgo says it is possible to sponsor a warm coat for a greyhound ina Spanish shelter? For only 5 euros or 4 British Pounds a totally quilted coat, water-resistant, with a fleece lining is made by volunteers.

Winters in Spain are cold but even in the summer the nights can be very cool.
A lot of greyhounds in Spanish shelters are chilly without a coat. They are skinny, very often have to sleep outside, and with some bad luck, on the
cold concrete.

Operation Harry - European associations join forces to help the galgos

Many of you may wonder what happened with the dogs after being rescued by the guardia civil in operation Harry y Clavijo.

The dogs are relatively well, some very thin but on the way to recovery.

What is worrying is the fact that the dogs are not vaccinated. What happens if one falls ill - you can imagine!
