16 galgos were rescued from Spain to France last weekend, 20/21 September, by the team from L'Europe des Levriers.
Some galgos were included which did not have permanent homes to go to in France, precipitated by the threat of being stolen by gypsies.
This was the case of little Negrita, who was in the same refuge as Gemilla (above) and Diana, the latter 2 stolen by gypsies. This was also the case for Joselin and Leonidas, in a refuge at Cadiz, from which 3 galgos were stolen.
Lorca was also included in this rescue, the poor galga whose shoulder was fractured by a bullet from a gun carried by her galguerro.
Gentle, calm and quiet, she needed somewhere to recuperate. Her foot is not a problem for her, she can walk and run no problem. She is now with a foster family at La Rochelle where she waits to find a permanent home.
Pintas was another galgo brought out in this rescue, adopted in the Paris region after spending all summer regaining enough health to make the journey.
September is the year for reflection for L'Europe des Levriers. In 2 years we have saved and rehomed more than 400 galgos. We have tried to save as many as possible and place them in loving permanent homes.
Sadly, this latest rescue starts the rhythm of one per month. The start of the hunting season is with us, the gypsies and galguerros are in the process of choosing the galgos to hunt this season - before abandoning them next February or March.
The cycle continues each year. But we are more determined than ever to fight for these marvellous dogs. We have another year's experience and we will be stronger this year, better organised, with more team members and also working together with other rescue associations.
