Thinking of Spain for Winter Sun and Warmth? Look no further!

GalgoThinking of going on holiday to Spain - want some warmth for the winter? Well, this poor galgo got more warmth than he deserved - courtesy of inhuman Spaniards!

This is a message from a volunteer in Spain.

Dear friends,

I send you a terrible news. Yesterday in the evening we gathered in the suburbs of Albacete this poor galgo, after the call of a few women who were walking along the zone.

As you can see in the photos, he was burned alive with petrol....., he took burns as a great part of the body and especially for the head, his mouth and eyes were burned, besides other zones of the body. His suffering was enormous and our veterinarians decided upon euthanasia, since it was the more humane thing that it was possible to do for him, the poor dog already was agonizing between terrible pains ......

We all in the refuge remain very impressed and with an enormous feeling of impotence and of anger towards another atrocity more than it commits with one of the most docile dogs of the world.

The photos are very strong.

Sad regards

Pemphigus Foliaceous - update on Karmel

Pemphigus roliaceous
Regular visits to the vet with Karmel are still necessary as we try to find the minimum dosage of megasolene for the maximum control of this disease. She was down to 1 tablet every other day, but lesions started appearing on her beautiful face, so we had to up the dose to 2 tablets per day for a week.

That week finishes today, and from tomorrow the dosage is reduced to 1 1/2 tablets per day for 3 weeks. If this keeps the disease under control, we will try 1 tablet per day.

I have been contacted by someone else whose dog has been diagnosed with pemphigus foliaceous and it is interesting to compare notes.

Saved from the Galguerros and Gypsies - when will the horror stop?

Gemilla16 galgos were rescued from Spain to France last weekend, 20/21 September, by the team from L'Europe des Levriers.

Some galgos were included which did not have permanent homes to go to in France, precipitated by the threat of being stolen by gypsies.

This was the case of little Negrita, who was in the same refuge as Gemilla (above) and Diana, the latter 2 stolen by gypsies. This was also the case for Joselin and Leonidas, in a refuge at Cadiz, from which 3 galgos were stolen.

Lorca was also included in this rescue, the poor galga whose shoulder was fractured by a bullet from a gun carried by her galguerro.

Nevado - time is running out for him

NevadoNevado is a stunning pure white galgo, 2 years old, living in France with an English family.

They have to return to the UK and unfortunately cannot take Nevado with them, (Spanish paperwork not correct for UK) so are desperately seeking a loving home for him.

He is a gentle, affectionate, playful boy, house trained, fine with other dogs, cats and horses. He is castrated, microchipped, fully vaccinated and blood tested for leishmania, ehrlichia and filaria (all negative).

This is a link to him http://www.adopter-levrier.com/adoptions.php

Contact L'Europe des Levriers direct to adopt him. There is an English page.

Maria Daines in concert in Belgium for Scooby Medina and Galgos

Update on Karmel and Pemphigus Foliaceous

It is 3 weeks since Karmel last visited the vet. Since then she has been on 1 megasolene tablet per day for 10 days, then half a megasolene tablet for 10 days. Karmel has continued in general good health - bright eyes, no skin problems, just 1 wart appearing on 1 foot, eager to walk the meadows with our other dogs.

We went back to the vet yesterday. There is still a slight problem with her feet (I can't see it!) and her skin is not as good as it can be (I think it's ok). I bow down to the far superior knowledge of my wonderful vet.

A stolen galgo, an injured Galgo, the Spanish police and Greyhoundsrescue Holland - what links them?

Galgorescue1
This is the tale of an incredible operation between Greyhoundsrescue Holland, Mieke, a volunteer, a unit of Spanish police, and an injured galgo. It's also a tale of the search for a stolen galgo, entering the bleak, vicious world of the gypsies.

It's a tale of bravery, compassion, co-operation, understanding across borders, and an example of what can be achieved when the Spanish police actually work with the volunteers rather than ignoring them.
